Interview a Potential Tarot or Oracle Deck Like You Would A Coach
This Saves Time and Money Buying the Right Tarot Deck For Yourself
Buying tarot or oracle decks is an addiction.
Many decks look great, but how do you choose one that will work for you? If you don’t carefully consider it, the deck becomes another impulsive buy.
The new deck is used once or twice and thrown in a drawer with all your other decks.
A Deck Gone Too Far
Eventually, you open the drawer, and it is full of decks you have barely used. How to choose the right deck or decide which one to use is still the question. None of them feel exactly right.
I have collected tarot and oracle decks for the last twenty years.
I have a cabinet full of them. I have done this countless times. I buy decks, use them a few times, then stash them. I eventually give the deck away because it doesn’t work for me.
I developed the Interview process because I only wanted a couple of decks, not the dozens I had.
Deck Interview Begins
My first thought as I pick up the deck is the symbolism that it uses.
Do the symbols that resonate with me? This eliminates the decks that have great artwork or are cute. They are great to look at, but don’t tap your intuition.
Now, I will look closer at the artwork and the book (if one is included).
Is the book easy to use? Does the artwork have symbols that I resonate with?
Now that I like the deck’s overall look, I will examine a few individual cards to see how I like them. Each tarot deck practitioner has certain cards they draw or look at, giving them a barometer of the deck.
They can be cards that are favorites or the ones that send chills down your spine when you pick them.
I feel that my particular cards are the darkest cards on the deck. If I can look at or resonate with them, I can resonate with the rest of the deck.
Deck Interview Gets Specific
I look at the aces of the deck. The symbolism and the energy you get off these cards set the tone for the minor arcana. I then look for the 9 and 10 of swords. These are some of the more complex minor arcana cards to draw. I ensure I can resonate with the energy the deck gives off.
I then turn my attention to the Major Arcana. I look at the 0-Fool, 13-Devil, and 15-Tower Cards, examine their symbolism, and decide whether I like them or not.
I consider the deck’s relevance to my spiritual practice, which is where I use them most of the time. I put it back if it does not concern my spiritual practice.
Oracle decks are more of a gamble because they don’t follow the traditional tarot deck. There is so much variety among them.
I look closely at them, but I still applied the interview principles. I look at the artwork and the cards’ symbolism again to ensure that I had an affinity for them and that they fit with my spiritual practice.
If this works, I will purchase the deck and take it home.
Now, I will apply this second part of the interview. I have a spread that I use to ask the deck questions to test our compatibility.
I looked up the Interview Spread and modified it to include questions that work for me.
8 Questions To Ask Your Deck
I organized eight questions to ask and proceeded to draw cards for them.
What personality do you have?
What is your strength?
What is your weakness?
How will you inspire me?
How will you challenge me?
What should I call on you for guidance?
What is the best way to work with you?
What will our relationship be like?
This is a great way to know the deck and see if you align with its energy. Initially, it is a bit time-intensive, but it saves throwing another deck in the drawer to collect dust.
I also believe in adaption. If the questions don’t work, change them if you find better ones that work for you.
